May 19, 2022 — After a 13-hour day of fundraising across central Illinois, Operation Honor Guard announced that it raised $135,278 through drop-off and online donations. The money raised will be used to support the Honor Guard across the country, especially in local Illinois communities.

Rich Darby, founder of Operation Honor Guard and a funeral director in Danville, Illinois, says that increased gas prices and inflation have made the need to support the Honor Guard more important now than ever.

“The Honor Guard members are having to pay for gas and they’re having to make their way to the cemetery.” says Darby. “If you’ve ever been at a military funeral and… you’ve seen them present the flags and the firing of the guns and [play] Taps… that’s something that can’t go away. Our country needs this.”

D102 and K-ROCK, two radio stations owned by Neuhoff Media, broadcasted live during the Day of Giving from Hall of Fame Plaques & Signs in Danville, which was one of seven donation sites across central Illinois. Mike Shamus, the general manager of Neuhoff Media Danville, was motivated by the dedication of local Honor Guard members and veterans.

“To see our Veterans standing out in the rain, raising money to help pay for uniforms and expenses associated with the Honor Guard was inspiring. Neuhoff Media is very grateful to be part of such a great cause.”

Operation Honor Guard’s Day of Giving started in 2013, with one donation site and a total of $900 raised to give Honor Guard members in Danville, Illinois new uniforms. The scope of this event has grown significantly within the following years, as this year’s total exceeded the organization’s goal of $125,000.
