Sensory-Friendly Fair: 99-7 The MIX Collaborates with Illinois State Fair to Support Individuals with Sensory Challenges

In a bid to increase accessibility and inclusivity for individuals with sensory processing disorders, the Illinois State Fair has announced two new initiatives and Neuhoff Media’s 99-7 The MIX is excited to be a part of it.  The fair, scheduled to kick off on Thursday, August 10, will host “Sunflower Hours” and introduce the “Sensory Station” to create a more comfortable and accommodating environment for those who often experience sensory overload.

During “Sunflower Hours,” which will take place on Saturday, August 12 (Kids Day), the fair will make adjustments to select programming from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. These modifications aim to create a softer and more calming atmosphere for children and adults with sensory processing disorders. Various stages will offer family-friendly entertainment, without the use of large sound systems or loud music, allowing fairgoers to enjoy their visit at their own pace.

A highlight of the “Sunflower Hours” will be a silent dance party hosted by Neuhoff Media’s 99-7 The MIX. Fairgoers will have the opportunity to enjoy a dance party with wireless headphones, accommodating up to 50 participants at a time. The headphones will be sanitized between uses, and new playlists will start every 20 minutes.

In collaboration with North American Midway Entertainment, the carnival rides in the Carnival Midway and Adventure Village will operate without bright lights and loud sounds during “Sunflower Hours.” To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, fairgoers utilizing the rides during this time are encouraged to be accompanied by a caregiver or adult.

To aid fair staff and volunteers in identifying individuals who may require additional assistance, sensory processing challenge stickers will be distributed during “Sunflower Hours.” These stickers act as visual cues and can be picked up inside the Emmerson Building. While self-identification is not mandatory, many fairgoers find this communication tool extremely helpful while navigating the fairgrounds. The stickers will only be required for use of the carnival rides.

Recognizing the need for a designated area where individuals and families can regroup and find solace amidst the fair’s overstimulating environment, the Illinois State Fair has created the “Sensory Station” in the Emmerson Building, previously known as Kids Korner. This dedicated quiet zone will provide a variety of resources, including weighted blankets, noise-canceling headphones, calming pods, and quiet activities to aid in processing the sights, smells, noises, and crowds at the fair. Trained volunteers will be available to assist individuals and guide them towards the appropriate resources within the Sensory Station.

Additionally, through a partnership with Hope School, the fair will offer sensory bags, equipped with noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, and sunglasses, for individuals to check out and use throughout the fairgrounds. Hope School’s Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, Amanda Brott, expressed her excitement about the partnership, stating, “Having an opportunity to provide support to fair-goers is a way for Hope to ensure that everyone, including those with developmental or intellectual differences, are able to access and enjoy this year’s event!”

The Illinois State Fair’s Sensory Friendly Fair initiative aims to create an inclusive environment for all attendees. To learn more about the initiative, including a guided itinerary and additional information to help families plan their visit, interested individuals can visit the official Sensory Friendly Fair website.

With the partnership between the Illinois State Fair and 99-7 The MIX, fairgoers with sensory processing disorders can look forward to a more comfortable and enjoyable experience at this year’s event. The Illinois State Fair will continue its commitment to accessibility and inclusivity as it opens its doors on August 10, offering 11 days of family fun and entertainment in Springfield, Illinois.
