Ford Decides to Keep AM Radio in its Vehicles

By Michelle Mitchell May 23, 2023 | 8:23 PM

After a heavy campaign by the National Association of Broadcasters, fully supported by Neuhoff Media, Ford has reversed its decision to remove AM radio from their vehicles.

On Twitter Ford’s CEO, Jim Farley (@jimfarley98) wrote, “After speaking with policy leaders about the importance of AM broadcast radio as a part of the emergency alert system, we’ve decided to include it on all 2024 @Ford and @LincolnMotorCo vehicles.  For any owners of EVs without AM broadcast capability, we’ll offer a software update.  Customer can currently listen to AM radio content in a variety of ways in our vehicles – including via streaming – and we will continue to innovate to deliver even better in-vehicle entertainment and emergency notification options in the future.  Thanks to our product development and manufacturing teams for their quick response to make this change for our customers.”

Ford’s decision came after a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced legislation called the “AM for Every Vehicle Act” calling for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to require AM in new vehicles at no additional cost.

Though Ford’s move is a step in the right direction, the legislation has yet to be passed.
