Safety First
When practicing the below wrestling drills, make sure you have adult supervision and working through the drills slowly!

Wrestling Drill 1

Skill: Stance

Focus: Squared or Staggered Stance, Good Balance, Shoulders, Elbows and Toes should all be aligned, Shuffling feet.

Equipment Needed:

  • Mat or Padded Area

Challenge: Combine stance in motion, level change and  penetrate with trail leg coming up!

Wrestling Drill 2

Skill: Stance Progression

Focus: Good Balance, level change and shadow your partner, penetrate in and outside leg comes up.

Equipment Needed:

  • Mat or Padded Area
  • Partner

Challenge: Once you’ve practice this stance progression with a partner, attempt a double leg take down.

Wrestling Drill 3

Skill: Set Up

Focus: Beat the head and hands to attack at the hips. Establish inside control, thumbs used as lever to create a pull grip.

Equipment Needed:

  • Mat or Padded Area
  • Partner

Challenge: Once you’ve mastered the push/pull, incorporate your stance progression – level change to take down.

Wrestling Drill 4

Skill: Outside Single

Focus: Push – Pull – Circle. Level change, focusing on one side, switching hand from upper body grip to leg. Good driving point with the leg, make sure head is up.

Equipment Needed:

  • Mat or Padded Area
  • Partner

Wrestling Drill 5

Skill: Outside Single Progression

Focus: Chest high, down on the ankle keeping the opponents leg high.

Equipment Needed:

  • Mat or Padded Area
  • Partner

Wrestling Drill 6

Skill: Defense

Focus: Good stance, down block, sneak hand behind the arm and circle.

Equipment Needed:

  • Mat or Padded Area
  • Partner

Challenge: Start slow and try to speed up your pace as you master this skill!

Wrestling Drill 7

Skill: Defense Progression

Focus: Knee slide, inside leg, stand up. Create space between you and your opponent.

Equipment Needed:

  • Mat or Padded Area
  • Partner

Challenge: Master this skill with and without a partner!

Wrestling Drill 8

Skill: Defense Progression 2

Focus: Use your hands to get out of bottom position, pressure into your opponent, close off the inside, both hands attack and push opponents hand on the mat.

Equipment Needed:

  • Mat or Padded Area
  • Partner

Skill: Break Down Top Position

Focus: Top position, spiral ride into wrist half.

Equipment Needed:

  • Mat or Padded Area
  • Partner

Skill: Break Down Progression

Focus: Break down position into an arm bar.
